Abstract

This study examines the interdependence between religion and local wisdom in the indigenous community of Kampung Dukuh, Ciroyom Village, Cikelet District, Garut Regency, West Java. This research is crucial due to the increasing dominance of Western culture, which has contributed to the erosion of local wisdom. As a result, two issues have emerged: (1) the degradation of local values that are known primarily by the older generation, while the younger generation is less familiar with them; and (2) the growing influence of Western concepts that are top-down, dualistic, centralized, and formal-legalistic in nature, which frequently generate various environmental problems. The purpose of this study is to obtain data on the forms of local wisdom by describing, exploring, and explaining the local wisdom shaped by the interdependence of religion and culture in its original form, in accordance with the character and lived reality of the Kampung Dukuh indigenous community. The research employs a multi-faceted approach. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document/literature review. The findings reveal that the local wisdom expressed by the Kampung Dukuh indigenous community is constructed within the framework of kasuaran karuhun (taboos and ancestral advice), grounded in the awareness of both religious values and local cultural values (indicating interdependence between religion and culture). This wisdom emerges as a social construction of local elites passed down across generations and is subjectively recognized as “Islamic custom.” Environmental management practices are based on the importance of the interrelation between God, humans, and nature as the fundamental purpose of human life—serving God while building a civilization rooted in justice, beauty, and collective well-being.
